  The hazards of mercury exposure are well chronologized as it readily gives off very poisonous vapors, with cumulative effects upon the nervous system. The toxicity of mercury is such that the element and its compounds should not be allowed to contaminate the air or water. Law prohibits concentrations of mercury vapor greater than 0.1 mg/m3. Concentrations of up to 20 mg/m3 can go unnoticed for long periods of time, creating a serious hazard to health. OSHA inspections of laboratories and other areas where mercury is used often check for free mercury vapor concentration.
