Who Can Benefit from Day-Lights?

A growing body of research shows that bright light therapy can relieve certain physical and emotional; conditions by regulating our internal biological rhythms, or resetting our body clock during the fall and winter months. This research points to the importance that daylight plays in promoting health and well-being, and offers hope from those who are light deprived.

Are you light deprived?

Many of us are daylight deprived. In fact, most people spend more than 23 hours of their 24 hour day indoors, where illumination rarely exceeds twilight levels. The daylight deprived are typically those who:

-Live in northern latitudes where daylight hours are
seasonally shorter
-Live in cloudy or overcast areas, where dark days
are common
-Are homebound, and cannot get outside easily
-Work at night or irregular shift schedules.

The daylight deprived often experience one or more of the following problems:

-The Winter Blues, typically accompanied by low energy levels, moodiness, social withdrawal or a general feeling of being down
-Difficulty falling asleep and waking up at the desired times, and a drowsy, tired feeling during the day, decreased alertness and performance
-Trouble adjusting to an irregular work and travel schedule
-Possible craving for carbohydrates and associated weight gain.

If you are one of those people who dread the short, dark winter days and feel light deprived, Day-Lights can bring you the light of springtime any month of the year!

How Day-Lights Work

Photobiological research points to the importance of the internal biological clock, or body clock," in your overall well-being. Day-Lights provide light of daytime intensity (early morning/late afternoon spring-time levels) to help you put your body clock "in sync."

The Care and Setting of your Body Clock
An overwhelming amount of research shows that light of daytime intensity is a critical element in body clock synchronization. The daylight deprived do not receive adequate light of daytime intensity from conventional lighting.

When light hits the retina of your eye, the retina transmits impulses to your body clock located in the hypothalamic centre of your brain. When your body clock is working properly, your day/night activity pattern is synchronized with your work schedule and lifestyle and you "feel better."

Enjoy the light of springtime everyday
Day-Lights can be helpful for anyone who feels light deprived. A daily session of 30 minutes sitting 12 to 15 inches from the light is sufficient for most people during the fall and winter months.

Day-Lights produce 10,000 lux (the level of light illumination), which is roughly equivalent to light levels on an early spring morning. (The typical illumination level in an office is between 250 and 1,000 lux – equivalent to light levels at sunset.) 10,000 lux is generally considered optimal for increasing the light requirements of the daylight deprived.

Day-Lights also feel sunnier than ordinary fluorescent lights because they emit rays of the warmer color spectrum (3000 Kelvin), and minimize the blue spectrum. (Kelvin is a measure of the light color spectrum.) Office lights typically emphasize cool white light (5000 Kelvin, higher blue spectrum). Soft white light produces less glare and is easier on the eyes.

Because of the potentially harmful effects of the ultraviolet light spectrum, we design Day-Lights to be ultraviolet light  free. Unlike sunlight or a tanning lamp, Day-Lights will not give you a tan or burn

Remember, it is the brightness of light, not the color spectrum, that determines the light therapy benefits. Using a Day-Light is as safe as taking an early morning walk outdoors on a clear spring day.
