Critical Couture

Critical Couture was conceived by a physician with a lifelong interest in fashion and design for the benefit of female health care practitioners. From the beginning of medical school, the co-founder was disappointed with the poor design, quality and construction of women's white coats. Boxy cuts, puckery seams, and poor fabrics were not only characteristic of the "short" coats she had to wear as a medical student, but were also ubiquitous characteristics of the "long" white coats worn by her female attending physicians, fellows, residents and interns. She promised herself that she would find a quality, appropriately-designed and fitted coat; and if she could not find one, she would design one.

She was finally moved to action during her fellowship, when she found herself in scrubs every day, over which she was required to wear the typical after-thought of a woman's white coat. Frustrated that she felt less professional than ever due to her required attire, she spent a non-call weekend cutting a pattern for her new white coat.

As the prototype coat neared completion, with great assistance from her mother, she shared her idea and design with friends. There was overwhelming enthusiasm, especially from her friends who were also physicians or other health care providers. All desired to wear a white coat that appropriately represented their profession. So, Critical Couture was created.

The mission of Critical Couture is to provide well-designed, well-constructed women's white coats that reflect the dedication, quality, and professionalism of health care providers.
